This month in your garden

There's a chill in the air; winter is fast approaching. It's your last chance to start preparing and planting your winter garden. April is also great month for repairing or sowing a new lawn.
Harvest the last of your summer veggies, store potatoes, pumpkin and onions in a cool dry area. In their place, plant winter seedlings such as broccoli, carrots and cabbage directly into your garden bed. In areas that are getting cold, remove tomato plants and ripen any green fruits on the window sill.
April is a great time to prune back your rose bushes. Deadhead the old flowers and diseased leaves to keep it looking nice and tidy during the winter months and mix some compost into the soil to get it ready for new blooms. It's also your last chance to get spring bulbs planted.
Autumn is here, and it's the main harvest time for apples, pears, grapes and many other varieties of fruit. If you are planting fruit trees at this time of year choose hardy frost resistant varieties such as feijoas. Put them in a position of full sun, either into containers or they can be made into a hedge.
Be on the lookout for slugs and snails. It's also a time when vegetables succumb to mildew and other fungal problems, so give them a spray if it appears. To avoid increasing the risk of fungal problems, try to avoid wetting the foliage when watering.
This is a guide only. Visit your local garden store for more info.
