This month in your garden

November usually means warmer days and less wind and summer is just around the corner. It’s a great time for planting lots of fruit and veges. If you haven't already, prepare your garden beds, add compost to help improve your soil structure, encourage worms, and add nutrients.
Plant your tomatoes and potatoes, sow seeds such as carrots and parsnips directly into the soil. Keep picking silverbeet, radishes & lettuce. Mustard greens, NZ spinach and peas should be ready to start eating now too.
It's a good time for planting marigolds and summer flowering perennials. In dry areas begin watering, but don't over-water. Add compost to help the soil hold moisture. Mulch and continue weeding to keep unwanted plants under control.
There's a lot to plant this month – citrus fruits like lemons, oranges and grapefruit. Gooseberries, blueberries, boysenberries, blackberries, kiwifruit and feijoas can also be planted. Make sure they get plenty of sun and shelter from strong winds.
Aphids, slugs and snails are out actively looking for food, Lay slug bait to protect newly emerging shoots. Keep an eye out for the white butterfly at this time of year too.
This is a guide only. For more in depth information please visit your local gardening centre.
