This month in your garden

If conditions are very dry in your area, water regularly and deeply, but also look at conserving water usage - especially in drought prone areas. Installing timers and using water from cooking are just a couple of ways to do so. Mulching limits weeds and enables soil to retain moisture.
Regularly pick off vegetables as they ripen, this will keep the plant producing longer. Keeping courgettes on the vine too long will make them turn into marrows - they are much tastier when young. Continuous pruning of basil flowers will keep the plant alive and leafy.
Deadheading roses and other flowering plants will help keep them flowering longer. At this time of year, there are lots of bulbs appearing. They are best planted when it cools down and can be stored well in a dark, dry cool place until autumn.
It's time to start preparing your garden for winter. Pick fruit every day to encourage late fruiting, and if you have too many, freeze and preserve them. To prepare trees for the cooler months, especially citrus, fertilise for best results.
White butterflies and other small insects are out in large numbers now. Spray plants to keep under them under control. Try soapy water if you suspect something is eating leaves of edible plants like basil before resorting to stronger insecticides.
This is a guide only. Visit your local garden store for more info.
