This month in your garden

Goodbye summer and welcome autumn. The days are starting to cool down so it's the perfect time to start preparing and planting your winter garden. If conditions are still very dry in your area, continue to water regularly and deeply.
Your garden will probably be inundated with all kinds of vegetables. Regularly pick off vegetables as they ripen and if you find yourself with too many, consider making chutneys, relishes, or freezing them to use later on in the year.
To get flowers well established before the shorter, colder winter days, autumn becomes an important season to prepare your garden for spectacular colour in the winter and spring. When soil cools down, plant new bulbs or fertilise existing ones. Prune back perennials that have finished for the season.
Autumn is here, and it's the main harvest time for apples, pears, grapes and many other varieties of fruit. If you are planting fruit trees at this time of year, it is important to put them in a position of full sun but also an area where it is protected from strong winds.
White butterflies, slugs and snails are still out in large numbers. Lay slug pellets down and spray plants to keep under them under control. In your edible garden areas, spraying soapy water all over plants works well if you discover something is nibbling on leaves.
This is a guide only. Visit your local garden store for more info.
