This month in your garden

Summer is here! Grab those gardening gloves, and mulch mulch mulch. Most plants will benefit as it provides nutrients and conserves water, particularly in the drier regions and if you're heading away for the Christmas break. Water generously in the morning as watering in the heat of the day can scorch leaves.
Enjoy your brussel sprouts? Now's a great time to sow the sprouted seeds in containers for planting in the new year. It's also a perfect time for sowing potatoes, they will benefit from a good mound of soil around the plants. Everything that's ready to be picked should be picked before the hottest days arrive.
Deadhead hydrangeas after their first flowering. It's also a good time for planting marigolds and summer flowering perennials. In dry areas begin watering, but don't over-water. Add compost to help the soil hold moisture. Roses should also be pruned and fed to encourage longer lasting blooms.
Strawberry season is upon us (yummy!), but make sure you keep a net around them to keep birds away (wire mesh works well). Young fruit trees will need a little support so make sure to stake them while they establish good deep roots. A good water & feed every few days will help promote juicy fruit.
Aphids, slugs and snails are out actively looking for food, Lay slug bait to protect newly emerging shoots. Keep an eye out for the white butterfly at this time of year too.
This is a guide only. Visit your local garden store for more info.
