This month in your garden

It's the time of year to think about conserving water usage - especially in drought prone areas or regions that charge for water usage. Keep mulching - it limits weeds and enables soil to retain moisture and keep plant roots cooler.
There are a lot of vegetables to harvest this month! Onions and garlic will be ready this month. Pick tomatoes as they ripen. Keep a close eye on your mustard greens - they can go to seed under the hot summer sun. If possible move them to an area with afternoon shade.
Time to deadhead those roses to promote blooms. It's also time for planting marigolds and sunflowers. Water plenty into the soil rather than on to leaves. The occasional liquid feed will help too. Most plants will benefit with adding extra compost to help the soil hold moisture.
There may be some late season strawberries still growing, so pay special attention to these and be rewarded. Young fruit trees will need a little support so make sure to stake them while they establish good deep roots. A good water & feed every few days will help promote juicy fruit.
Aphids, slugs and snails are out actively looking for food, Lay slug bait to protect weaker plants and newly emerging shoots. Keep an eye out for the white butterfly at this time of year too. Some plants also act as a natural insect repellent so consider planting some of these.
This is a guide only. Visit your local garden store for more info.
